Webuild is looking for a Senior Hydroelectric Mechanical Engineer to be included in the Operations Sub-Saharian Africa division at the Rome headquarters.

The position is based in the Rome city centre office and involves long assignments (minimum 1 month) to China. After one year, the employee will be permanently transferred to the construction site of the Koysha Dam, in Ethiopia.

 

The candidate should have a solid understanding of (1) mechanical and hydro-mechanical systems, (2) the principles and practices relevant to these technical fields, and (3) how to collaborate effectively with other technical disciplines involved in the operation of a hydropower facility.

 

He/she will provide mechanical engineering services, including technical support and supervision within the team, and will be responsible for ensuring technical excellence, supervising teams, and adhering to design, timelines and budgets.

 

Main responsibilities:

  • Prepare and review technical documentation, including schematics, blueprints, and reports in coordination with the suppliers/sub-contractors, in compliance with Employer Requirements, design criteria, etc.
  • Providing ongoing engineering support to the project to address open items of detailed design.
  • Attending and providing support during design review meetings with the Project Stakeholders including verify design review responses before they are issued back.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers, civil engineers, and other specialists.
  • Performing QA/QC inspections. Review/develop Inspection and Test Plans (ITP) and commissioning support for mechanical scope of work (incl. factory acceptance tests, site acceptance tests).
  • Coordinate and participate in factory inspections and testing activities.
  • Coordinate design interfaces with Civil, Architecture, Electromechanical, Electrical Project Engineers and other discipline leads.
  • Close coordination with other construction and Commissioning departments during execution, especially erection and commissioning of Mechanical equipment (Hydro mechanical, turbine and Generator, Balance of Plant electrical and mechanical equipment, piping, penstock).
  • Keeping a close eye on work progress and providing reports, with a focus on identifying any gaps or issues that may necessitate additional scope of work.

 

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical engineering, preferably in the power generation sector; experience in technical inspections is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, including turbines, pumps, and generators.
  • Willingness to undertake mid-term assignments abroad and to relocate to the Koysha Dam construction site after one year at the Rome headquarters.
  • Advanced knowledge of English, both written and spoken; knowledge of Italian is a plus.
  • Proficiency in CAD software and other engineering tools.
  • Knowledge of project and task management tools.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and regulatory requirements, safety protocols and environmental regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to manage a complex project, work to deadlines and establish procedures for monitoring and reporting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills including in a culturally diverse or multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Willingness to work in various environmental conditions and perform physical tasks as needed.
