The Future Generation Joint Venture brings together the combined engineering experience and expertise of WeBuild, Clough and Lane and has been selected to design construct Snowy 2.0. This project is based within the Snowy Mountains in NSW and will deliver one of the largest pumped hydro schemes in the world. 

Snowy 2.0 is the next chapter in the Snowy Scheme's history. It is the largest committed renewable energy project in Australia and will provide on-demand energy and large-scale storage for many generations to come. This Iconic Project has and will continue to create its own legacy in Australian history.

Purpose of the Role

The Deputy Design Manager (DDM) supports the Design Manager in developing design solutions for the Snowy 2.0 Project in accordance with agreed time, cost, quantity and scope requirements. The DDM is responsible for leading all aspects of the main and completion works across the Project, coordinating FGJV’s engineering team and liaising between civil works designers and the technical office. This role involves coordinating design activities across different design companies, leading the Design Package Lead Engineers and handling contract communication with the contract division and subcontract leads. Furthermore, the DDM manages Project documentation and provides technical support throughout the design phase.

Qualifications

 

  • Tertiary or further advanced qualification in civil engineering
  • Project Management qualification
  • White Card

Experience

  • Minimum 15 years of experience working in engineering design
  • Demonstrated experience in managing multiple design consultants on complex, multidisciplinary hydropower or infrastructure projects, including establishing and managing quality systems to ensure the integrity of design
  • Experience working on large-scale construction projects or other suitable projects works
  • Experience on EPC type contracts involving E&M scope integration
  • Underground project experience

Required Competencies

  • Advanced technical understanding of structural engineering, earthworks, underground excavation and concrete works
  • Sound knowledge of technical engineering specifications
  • Comprehensive understanding of contract, regulatory and legislative requirements

Core Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Assist the Design Manager in coordinating the design process across disciplines.
  • Coordinate design-related meetings and communicate with all stakeholders.
  • Review and analyse design proposals, ensuring alignment with client objectives.
  • Manage Project documentation, including drawings, reports, and specifications.
  • Identify and mitigate design risks, proactively applying problem-solving strategies.
  • Lead the designer contract in coordination with the subcontract division.
  • Manage the design delivery of all civil and completion works in line with the design program and client approval.
  • Ensure compliance of all civil and completion works design submissions with client requirements and procedures, including quality, occupational health and safety.
  • Coordinate with design subcontractors to provide construction inputs to the design and ensure timely delivery of the design packages.
  • Review all the submissions from DJV to ensure all agreed construction methodologies and construction sequences are appropriately incorporated into the design, providing feedback in case of any deviations to ensure constructability in line with agreed construction inputs.
  • Engage with the client and arrange workshops to explain the design submittal, working to expedite the design approval.
  • Review client comments on design submittals and, if required, prepare the responses with the help of the designers.
  • Ensure timely submission of responses to the client and arrange resolution meetings.
  • Supervise and delegate tasks to discipline engineers to ensure timely delivery.
  • Engage with the construction team to seek input on the agreed construction methodology and sequence for each specific project element and provide timely clarification on design-related queries.
  • Manage day-to-day activities and delivery of the allocated design packages within budget and quality standards.
  • Lead the design team, including planning and prioritising tasks.
  • Serve as the primary contact with FGJV peer reviewers on technical issues.
  • Schedule required consultants and estimate design fees.
  • Review written submissions and, if required, provide documentation contractor proposals.
  • Liaise with planning, building control and all respective regulatory bodies to meet statutory obligations.
  • Create Project and internal monthly design reports.
