Position Overview

The TBM Geologist is responsible for providing specialized geological and geotechnical expertise to support tunnel construction using a Tunnel Boring Machine. This role requires advanced understanding of subsurface conditions, accurate interpretation of geological features, and continuous coordination with construction and TBM operations to ensure safe, efficient, and technically sound excavation processes.

Key Responsibilities

Geological Assessment & Investigation

• Lead and interpret detailed site investigations to identify geological factors that may impact tunnel construction.
• Collect and analyze geological and geotechnical data, including rock type, strength, stability, groundwater levels, faults, discontinuities, and other subsurface features.
• Carry out extensive field investigations and deliver high-quality geological descriptions, including faults, joints, bedding planes, and folds, which influence excavation methods and support requirements.
• Predict tunnel behavior based on geological assessments and support the selection of suitable excavation and support strategies.

TBM Excavation Support

• Develop detailed method statements for excavation, addressing potential unforeseen ground conditions and defining mitigation or remediation measures.
• Assess risks associated with altered or challenging ground conditions and recommend appropriate control actions.
• Ensure all temporary and permanent ground support systems are correctly designed, installed, and operational prior to and during tunneling activities.
• Perform tunnel face mapping, including entering the TBM cutterhead chamber when required and permitted under safety procedures.

Testing, Monitoring & Reporting

• Oversee soil investigation tests and rock quality assessments.
• Conduct rock mass classification, dynamic probing tests, and surface grouting works, and maintain accurate documentation and reports.
• Monitor geological conditions during excavation to detect changes that may affect TBM performance or tunnel stability.
• Prepare daily tunnel progress reports, including geological observations, excavation performance, and predictions of tunnel-induced settlements.

Requirements

Education & Experience

• Degree or Diploma in Geology, Geological Engineering, or a related field.
• Experience working on TBM-driven tunnels or mechanized tunneling projects is highly preferred and a key requirement.

Technical Skills

• Strong knowledge of geological and geotechnical investigation methods, rock classification systems, and underground excavation processes.
• Ability to interpret geological and geotechnical data and apply it to TBM excavation and tunnel support decisions.
• Familiarity with site investigation testing, rock quality designation (RQD), and ground improvement techniques such as grouting.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Effective communication skills and the ability to work closely with multidisciplinary teams.
• Adaptability and sound decision-making in rapidly changing underground conditions.
