The Future Generation Joint Venture brings together the combined engineering experience and expertise of WeBuild, Clough and Lane and has been selected to design construct Snowy 2.0. This project is based within the Snowy Mountains in NSW and will deliver one of the largest pumped hydro schemes in the world.
Snowy 2.0 is the next chapter in the Snowy Scheme's history. It is the largest committed renewable energy project in Australia and will provide on-demand energy and large-scale storage for many generations to come. This Iconic Project has and will continue to create its own legacy in Australian history.
The Senior Project Engineer – Mechanical is responsible for the end-to-end delivery of assigned mechanical systems, including Potable Water and Water Purification, Fire Fighting, HVAC / Mechanical Ventilation, and Lifts. The role manages the packages from shop drawing and technical review through construction, testing and commissioning, client acceptance and final handover.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the review and coordination of mechanical shop drawings, technical submissions, Material Approval Requests, equipment data sheets, RFIs and design clarifications.
- Ensure compliance with approved design documentation, project requirements, applicable Australian Standards, manufacturer requirements and relevant statutory obligations.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary interfaces with electrical, controls/BMS, fire detection, civil, structural, architectural, communications and BIM teams.
- Identify and resolve design gaps, clashes, constructability issues and site constraints before they affect installation.
- Provide technical support to procurement, including review of supplier/subcontractor proposals, technical departures and long-lead equipment requirements.
- Manage and coordinate subcontractors, suppliers and site teams during construction and installation.
- Conduct site inspections, monitor progress, resolve technical/site issues and ensure work is installed in accordance with approved drawings, ITPs, specifications and quality requirements.
- Monitor engineering, procurement, installation and commissioning milestones and escalate programme risks or constraints.
- Support variation and claim assessments by confirming technical scope, quantities and whether proposed works are within the original subcontract requirements.
System Responsibilities
Potable Water & Water Purification
- Manage installation and coordination of potable water distribution, pumps, tanks, valves, treatment/purification equipment, instrumentation and associated interfaces.
- Coordinate power, controls, drainage and process interfaces for water treatment equipment.
- Manage pressure testing, flushing, cleaning, disinfection, water-quality testing and final commissioning to demonstrate required flow, pressure and water quality.
Fire Fighting
- Manage installation and coordination of firefighting pipework, pumps, hydrants, hose reels, valves and associated equipment.
- Ensure compliance with approved fire design, project requirements and applicable Australian Standards.
- Coordinate hydrostatic testing, flushing, functional testing, certification, witnessing and final system acceptance.
HVAC & Mechanical Ventilation
- Manage installation and commissioning of ductwork, pipework, fans, air-handling equipment, dampers, grilles, diffusers, supports and insulation.
- Coordinate HVAC interfaces with electrical power, BMS/controls and fire systems.
- Manage pre-commissioning, air/water balancing, controls testing, functional testing and verification of airflow, pressure, temperature and specified performance.
Lifts / Elevators
- Manage technical and site coordination of lift installation and interfaces with structural, architectural, electrical, communications and fire systems.
- Verify shafts, pits, headroom, openings, embedded items, power supplies and other installation prerequisites.
- Coordinate testing, statutory inspections, certification, commissioning, defect closeout and handover.
Testing, Commissioning & Handover
- Review and coordinate ITPs, testing procedures, commissioning procedures, method statements, check sheets and commissioning programmers.
- Confirm mechanical completion and system readiness before testing and commissioning.
- Manage applicable pressure testing, flushing, disinfection, functional testing, pump testing, HVAC balancing, controls/interlock testing, firefighting testing, lift testing and integrated system testing.
- Coordinate Client, designer, certifier and stakeholder witnessing requirements.
- Track and close defects, commissioning observations and punch-list items.
- Verify that completed systems meet design and performance requirements before recommending Client acceptance.
- Manage final as-built drawings, O&M manuals, test and commissioning records, compliance certificates, warranties, spare-parts documentation and training records.
- Coordinate operator/maintenance training, final demonstrations and handover to the Client.
Quality, Safety & Project Controls
- Ensure works comply with approved Quality Plans, ITPs, hold/witness points and project HSE requirements.
- Manage the technical aspects of NCRs, defects and corrective actions and maintain appropriate engineering/site records.
- Support safe planning for access, lifting, installation, pressure testing, energization and commissioning activities.
- Prepare progress updates and maintain visibility of key risks, actions, interfaces and outstanding deliverables.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent recognized qualification.
- Significant experience delivering mechanical systems on major infrastructure, industrial, power, tunnelling, building services or similar projects.
- Demonstrated experience managing systems from shop drawings through installation, testing, commissioning and handover.
- Strong knowledge of potable water/water treatment, firefighting, HVAC/ventilation and/or lift systems.
- Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, P&IDs, schematics, equipment schedules and technical specifications.
- Strong understanding of multidisciplinary MEP coordination, quality systems, commissioning processes and applicable Australian Standards.
- Experience with BIM/federated models, Aconex or similar document-control systems is desirable.
